it's a celebration for the meeting of (two stars) Orihime and Hikiboshi. Orihime, daughter of Tentei the sky king (universe), worked hard everday to weave beautiful kimonos for the sky gods. worried that she had no time to find her true love, Tentei hooked her up with Hikiboshi, a cattle herder who also worked all the time and lived on the other side of the Amanogawa river (milky way). they instantly fell in love and soon married but soon they both began to neglect their jobs. In anger Tentei separated the two across the Amanogawa river and agreed that if they worked hard they could meet once a year on July 7th. since the river is hard to cross, magpies fly down and let them walk across their wings to cross the river, but will only come out if it's not raining. so everyone is japan hopes it doesn't rain on July 7th or else the lovers can't meet for another year.
luckily this night was clear...
